Discovery Design Time: Shadow Box Pueblos

Discovery Design Time at Discovery Center

Discover the art of documentation through architecture! In this hands-on activity, guests will explore the tradition of shadow boxes — a creative way to capture and preserve memories, places, and experiences — while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the American Southwest.

Using construction paper, cutouts, oil pastels, and markers, participants will design and build their own Pueblo-inspired shadow box scenes. As they create, guests will study the distinctive architectural style of Pueblo communities, experimenting with shape, color, and depth to bring their scenes to life.

Along the way, we’ll explore how shadow boxes have long been used to document life’s meaningful moments — from graduation milestones to travel memories — and discover how architecture tells the story of a culture and its connection to the land.

This creative activity blends art, geography, and cultural exploration — building spatial thinking and fine motor skills along the way.

This program is included with general admission.
